Covid vaccine: Giving vitamin and mineral supplements to older people could make jabs more effective

by health and nutrition advice journalist
If we’re going to rely on Covid-19 vaccines to bring an end to the pandemic, we need to maximise their effects. But one thing that risks undermining their protectiveness is nutritional deficiency, particularly in the elderly. Older people have weaker immune responses and are known to respond less well than younger adults to many vaccines, including the seasonal influenza vaccine. This is partly down to frailty, which cannot be easily remedied, but can also be due to deficiencies in vitamins and minerals – known as micronutrients. For the immune system to fight off infection or generate good protection against a […]

Do you think nutritional supplements are worth the hype? Can they really make a difference in your health? Some “experts” will tell you to skip taking your vitamins, to forgo fish oil, and leave the supplements on the shelf. A 2015 survey shows almost 7 out of 10 Americans take dietary supplements. Thanks to the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994, Americans have access to quality dietary supplements that don’t exist even in many other developed countries. Some avid users of dietary supplements end up with a breakfast table full of vitamin, mineral, and herbal capsules.  But, are people being oversold on supplements? Are supplements being […]

by health and nutrition advice journalist
More than 4 in 5 American adults (86 percent) take vitamins or supplements, according to a recent online survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association.  However, only about a quarter (24 percent) of those taking vitamins or supplements received test results indicating they have a nutritional deficiency. People with a documented nutritional deficiency can often correct the problem more […]
