Data from a new study suggests that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can persist in different parts of the body for months after infection, including the heart and brain. This content was originally published here.
A little girl with diabetes was told she can’t go on a school cinema trip to reward pupils with perfect attendance – because she had to attend a hospital appointment. Children at Blackmoor Park Junior School, in West Derby, will be eligible for the fun activity if they attend school 100% of the time over the next half-term. But medical appointments are not exempt – meaning Olivia Harkins, seven, who has type 1 diabetes, will miss out because she had to see her consultant at Alder Hey. Her mum Liz accused the school of discrimination and said Olivia was devastated. […]
Fox News Flash top headlines are here. Check out what’s clicking on Foxnews.com. NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! A holiday party at the home of Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont earlier this month led to a “small number” of guests contracting “breakthrough” coronavirus infections, according to reports. Neither Lamont nor his wife Annie Lamont were affected, CTInsider.com reported. The infections occurred even though guests were required to provide proof of full vaccination status as well as a negative coronavirus test result, the report said. The Lamonts learned about the infections during the week that followed the Dec. 11 […]
“It’s too early to relax, but it’s encouraging that we are not following the worst-case scenario,” said Tyra Grove Krause, the chief epidemiologist at Denmark’s State Serum Institute. Denmark’s detailed, nationwide program for coronavirus testing and analysis gives its scientists a trove of real-time data about the pandemic. Because of that — and because it was one of the first countries outside of Africa to witness omicron’s explosive potential — it has turned into a European bellwether for what to expect with the omicron variant. Over the past week, the country has fared better than it was expecting. After surging […]
After about age 20, we may have all the insulin-producing beta cells we’re ever going to get. So, if we lose them, we may lose them for good. Autopsy studies show that by the time type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, we may have already killed off half of our beta cells. You can kill pancreatic cells right in a petri dish. If you expose the insulin-producing beta cells in our pancreas to fat, they suck it up and then start dying off. Fat breakdown products can interfere with the function of these cells and ultimately lead to their death. A chronic […]
Daily cases of Covid-19 have passed 100,000 as the Omicron variant sweeps across the UK, according to government figures – the highest number recorded since the pandemic began. More than 106,122 new infections were reported in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday, up from 90,629 on Tuesday, dashing hopes that cases could be beginning to plateau. The unprecedented figure will only intensify concerns about the likely impact of the Omicron variant on hospitalisations in the new year. The government has also provided a second metric showing the number of positive cases for the day the specimen was taken, which […]
In less than a month, the country’s omicron outbreak has gone from a near-vertical rise to a near-vertical fall. This content was originally published here.
This year’s Apple Watch upgrade will reportedly add another potentially transformative medical feature: a blood sugar sensor. That’s according to a new report from ET News, which says both Apple and Samsung will bake the feature into their respective smartwatches — the Apple Watch Series 7 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 — later in 2021. The report, which is published in Korean, focuses predominantly on Samsung. It claims that Samsung’s tech will be a “no-blood sampling method” that detects blood glucose levels using an optical sensor. This could be incredibly useful for diabetics, although it would also have other applications. […]
JOHANNESBURG — South Africa’s noticeable drop in new COVID-19 cases in recent days may signal that the country’s dramatic Omicron-driven surge has passed its peak, medical experts say. Daily virus case counts are notoriously unreliable, as they can be affected by uneven testing, reporting delays and other fluctuations. But they are offering one tantalizing hint — far from conclusive yet — that Omicron infections may recede quickly after a ferocious spike. South Africa has been at the forefront of the Omicron wave and the world is watching for any signs of how it may play out there to try to […]
Israelis over the age of 60 and medical teams will be eligible for a fourth Covid vaccination to protect against the fast-spreading omicron variant, prime minister Naftali Bennett has announced. “The citizens of Israel were the first in the world to receive the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and we are continuing to pioneer with the fourth dose as well,” he said on Tuesday, calling on those who meet the criteria to “go and get vaccinated.” Bennett’s remarks came after a meeting of the country’s ministerial coronavirus cabinet which convened amid growing concern over the spread of the Omicron […]
