What Went Wrong With the Coronavirus Pandemic in Florida – The New York Times

by health and nutrition advice journalist
In the first week of August, the state recorded another 5,600 deaths. But because mortality rates normally drop during summer months, the figure was more than 50 percent above what’s typical. “We’re seeing a ton of people calling us to report the Covid deaths,” said Dr. Stephen J. Nelson, the Polk County medical examiner. “They’re typically young people that have been sick for a while.” The picture of who is dying, however, is complicated. About 82 percent of people 65 and older in the state are fully vaccinated, about average for the nation. That has still left a relatively large […]

How the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare America’s diabetes crisis

by health and nutrition advice journalist
WEST ALEXANDRIA, OHIO It took the deadly disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic to expose a deeper, more intractable U.S. public-health crisis: For more than a decade, the world’s richest nation has been losing the battle against diabetes. Long before the pandemic, Kate Herrin was among the millions of Americans struggling to control their diabetes. Her problems often stemmed from her government-subsidized medical insurance. Doctors routinely rejected her Medicaid plan, and she repeatedly ran out of the test strips she needed to manage her daily insulin injections. She cycled in and out of emergency rooms with dangerously high blood-sugar levels, or […]

Covid: Arkansas jail dosing inmates with ivermectin in spite of FDA warnings | Coronavirus | The Guardian

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Inmates at a north-west Arkansas jail have been prescribed a medicine for treating coronavirus that is normally used to deworm livestock, despite federal health warnings to the public in exasperated tones. Washington county’s sheriff confirmed this week that the jail’s health provider had been prescribing the drug. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal drugs regulator, issued a warning via Twitter last weekend. “You are not a horse,” it said. “You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.” Sheriff Tim Helder did not say how many inmates at the 710-bed facility had been given ivermectin and defended […]

by health and nutrition advice journalist
By Charlie Dreaver for RNZ Five Aucklanders who turned up for their Covid-19 vaccine last month may have got a dose of saline solution instead but the Ministry of Health still has not told them. The ministry still has not being able say what will be done to ensure those affected will receive two full Pfizer doses. RNZ was alerted because of concerns there could be vulnerable people in the community who wrongly believe they are fully vaccinated. The mistake happened at the Highbrook vaccination centre in Auckland and RNZ understands the problem was discovered at the end of the […]

Ending lockdowns with 80% vaccinated could cause 25,000 Australian deaths, new modelling suggests | Coronavirus | The Guardian

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Australia’s national plan to end lockdowns once 80% of the adult population is vaccinated could result in 25,000 deaths in total and 270,000 cases of long Covid, new modelling warns. The work by researchers at three leading Australian universities predicts more than 10 times as many deaths as the Doherty Institute modelling that underpins the national four-phase roadmap. That plan was adopted by national cabinet in July but is subject to different interpretations by state and territory leaders. The Doherty modelling looked at the number of deaths in the first 180 days of reopening at the 70% and 80% thresholds […]

Diabetes and hypertension drug combo kills cancer cells

by health and nutrition advice journalist
In order to multiply, cancer cells need a lot of energy. Metformin is a common drug in the fight against type 2 diabetes. It lowers blood sugar by slowing the release of glucose from the liver and the absorption of sugar from food in the gut. The drug also treats insulin resistance by sensitizing the body’s cells to insulin, as well as treating obesity and aiding weight loss in people who do not have diabetes or prediabetes. Recently, scientists have brought more uses of the drug to light. Physicians prescribe metformin to help treat polycystic ovary syndrome, and some researchers […]

Covid 19 coronavirus: Chris Hipkins’ amusing slip up, tells Kiwis to socially distance when you ‘spread your legs’ – NZ Herald

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins fronted up to the media today to update the nation on today’s positive cases – but it was a rather humorous slip of the tongue that got the nation talking. At today’s conference, while Hipkins was detailing the case numbers and reminding everyone to socially distance, he instructed Kiwis to follow another set of bizarre rules. On the podium, Hipkins made a rather unintentional X-rated error, telling Kiwis about how they should social distance when they “spread their legs”. “It is a challenge for people in high density areas to get outside and spread their […]

Conservative Radio Host Phil Valentine Who Recorded Beatles Parody About Vaccines Dies From Coronavirus

by health and nutrition advice journalist
A conservative radio host in Nashville who derided vaccines and spread misinformation about the coronavirus has died of COVID-19. Phil Valentine was 61. Though Valentine downplayed the efficacy of vaccines and even went so far as to record a parody song mocking them, he reversed his opinion while in the hospital, advising his family members to get the jab. He had said of the vaccine, “I have a very low risk of A) Getting COVID and B) dying of it if I do. Why would I risk getting a heart attack or paralysis by getting the vaccine?” He also said […]
