Unmasking the Truth #7 – Have you read “How to Lie with Statistics”? | Sanctuary Functional Medicine

Unmasking the Truth #7 – Have you read “How to Lie with Statistics”? (skip to “The Seventh Question” below if you read prior questions already) Having broached the topic of masks, I want to encourage dialogue between the polarities of the debate. This is challenging given the political climate of uncivil discord rather than civil discourse.  With a vision of communities coming together to collectively determine truth and decide on policy, I offer a series of questions.  I don’t want to give answers, but questions that re-teach all of us to engage in discourse which will lead us to that vision. How Air Pollution Causes Diabetes

by health and nutrition advice journalist
People watch the sunset in Singapore, where the haze Pollutant Standards Index reached a high of 186 in October 2015 Edgar Su / Reuters It’s fairly well-known that a bad diet, a lack of exercise, and genetics can all contribute to type 2 diabetes. But a new global study points to an additional, surprising culprit: the air pollution emitted by cars and trucks. Though other research has shown a link between diabetes and air pollution in the past, this study is one of the largest of its kind, and it’s unique because it both is longitudinal and includes several types […]

Poll: Americans may be taking unnecessary vitamins, supplements

by health and nutrition advice journalist
More than 4 in 5 American adults (86 percent) take vitamins or supplements, according to a recent online survey conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the American Osteopathic Association.  However, only about a quarter (24 percent) of those taking vitamins or supplements received test results indicating they have a nutritional deficiency. Most people have no need to take vitamins and are wasting their money on supplements that are unlikely to improve their health and may actually harm it, says Mike Varshavski, DO, an osteopathic family physician. People with a documented nutritional deficiency can often correct the problem more […]

I’ll Take a Side Order of Clay with That Feed | Sanctuary Functional Medicine

by health and nutrition advice journalist
376views Sometimes we need to get away from the urban life into the country to learn a little science.  In this case, researchers were primarily looking for ways to alleviate the toxic effects of aflatoxin in animal food in the livestock industry.  For functional MD’s trying to care for mold toxic patients and keep our own families healthy, we can extrapolate this research to clinical practice.  These scientists reported that adding some bentonite clay to animal feed could lower aflatoxin effects without compromising other nutrients. Don’t the wrong idea that this research was simple however.  They did not just stand […]

A promising study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition reveals that the popular kitchen spice may be an effective treatment for the prevention of diabetes and its complications. Diabetes Begins with Bacteria – Sanctuary Functional Medicine

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Those outside of functional medicine may ridicule the notion that our gut play such a central role in our health (and so did I at one time), but recent research makes that more and more difficult to ignore.  Researchers in a Swedish university looked closely at the gut bacteria of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients searching for clues.  Many prior studies have associated the gut microbiome with various diseases, but few evaluated direct causation mechanisms.  These scientists discovered that the fecal samples of these diabetic patients contained higher levels of imidazole propionate, a bacterial by-product of the amino acid, […]

How Blood Sugar Can Trigger a Deadly Immune Response in the Flu and Possibly COVID-19 – Scientific American

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Many of the people dying in the novel coronavirus pandemic appear to be harmed more by their own immune system than by the virus itself. The infection can trigger a cytokine storm—a surge in cell-signaling proteins that prompt inflammation—that hits the lungs, attacking tissues and potentially resulting in organ failure and death. But this phenomenon is not unique to COVID-19; it sometimes occurs in severe influenza, too. Now a study sheds light on one of the metabolic mechanisms that help orchestrate such runaway inflammation. Scientists have long known that viral infections can affect human cellular metabolism, the system of biochemical […]

How to Help Your Medical Staff Stay Efficient and Complete Tasks – Functional Medicine SEO

by health and nutrition advice journalist
Most functional medicine practices do not have enough time in the day to manage all of the patients that are coming in and out plus other important tasks. You and your team can get busy, but not be efficient enough to get everything done. That’s why it’s important to teach your team how to prioritize tasks you need them to work on.  Don’t Treat Everything as Urgent One of the biggest problems is that we treat everything that is in front of us as urgent. The moment someone lays something on our desk or hands over a task, it’s easy […]
